Each of your tile projects is going to be very different and suited to your needs. Our work is all handmade and can have variations. We recommend you visit one of our showrooms or our studio and to get the help of a highly skilled tile designer to create the best design for you and your space.
Handcrafted Items: Please be sensitive and inform clients that this is a handcrafted product. There are variations in size and glaze coloring within each order, kiln load and firing. Due to the nature of handcrafted tile, orders may differ from showroom samples.
Product Knowledge Guide
Installation: Remember it is always best to use a professional tradesperson to install your hand made tile. They will have more experience and understand the qualities of a handmade tile.
Specification: Mangrove Bay Art Tile is appropriate for just about any application. The clay we use is a high fire stoneware which is brought to a temperature of 2380 degrees F. This causes the clay to become extremely hard and strong enabling it to take whatever conditions inside, outside, vertical or horizontal.
Tile Sizes: Hand crafted tiles are made with installation in mind with sizes being within a 16th of an inch to the standard size. Some grout lines may need to be more flexible as shrinkage rates and firing times can change the size of a tile even within a single firing of the kiln.
Process: Each tile is handmade carefully being designed and created by carving and embellishing the clay. Once the original tile is complete a plaster mold is poured to allow for re-creation of the tile. Each mold only lasts for a few hundred tile at a time. Each tile is pounded out by hand or with a tile press then left to dry for weeks and fired first to 1600 degrees in a bisquette fire then to 2380 to stoneware. Some tiles are painted and others are dipped. Regardless there are many steps taken to bring you a one- of- a-kind handcrafted tile to be enjoyed hopefully for decades to come.
